BIC 960 Turntable Description

Belt-Drive Programmed 6-Disc Multi-Play Turntable (1974-1976)

Sound wise, this is excellent. The Shure cartridge is superb and has a new elliptical diamond stylus. It is Shure's self-admitted second best cartridge, right behind the V15 that costs five times more!

The tonearm is a really cool design I have never seen before, with two ways to adjust the tracking force, and an adjustment for anti-skating right there. The force of the arm lift is adjustable. There is even an arm to adjust for conical or elliptical styli.

The BIC has a nice, smooth, 24-pole synchronous motor.

An exceptionally well preserved example of this U.S. made turntable from British Industries Inc. Disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, adjusted, reassembled, ready to play, but with some quirks. The arm lift needs dampening fluid, but I don't see any way of doing it, so in auto mode the needle bounces. Manually, you can let the arm down nice and easy. The auto-return works, but will sometimes return the needle to the lead-in groove, then shut off. I have not tested the multi-play function, as I am not sure how it works, but the multi-play spindle is included. Because of the quirks, I am adjusting the price down $100, accordingly.

That being stated, it works great in manual mode.

The plinth is made of real wood and is in excellent condition. The turntable itself is cosmetically excellent. The underside consists of a clear plastic cover, so you can see all of the mechanical and electrical parts. This cover is in good condition; it has one area that has a couple small cracks, under an inch in size. It is also yellowed with age. None of this is noticeable when the turntable is flat. The dust cover is in good condition with no cracks; there are quite a few scratches, however. These can be buffed out; many high-end auto detailers will do the job. At this price point, I will leave that up to the new owner!

Description:

The tone arm of the BIC 960 is the equal of the most sophisticated available. It will track any cartridge, CD-4 included, at the lowest setting recommended by the manufacturer.

Tracking force and anti-skate controls are operated by twin tabs atop the gimbal ring. The tabs flank a single linear scale which is calibrated in 0.25 gram increments. The scale is large, easy to read, and makes precise adjustment a simple matter.

Compensation for conical or elliptical stylus is made by a separate control on the program panel, so that regardless of stylus type, tracking force and anti-skate adjustment is made using the same scale.

The cartridge shell is attached to the tone arm by a 4-prong, gold-plated, plug-connector - the most precise and trouble-free connection possible.

A scale is provided so that in mounting the cartridge, overhang can be properly set. Using this same scale and an adjustment screw set into the shell, the forward tracking angle of the cartridge stylus can be set to exactly 15°.

Cueing is viscous damped in both directions and cueing time is adjustable from 1 to 3 seconds by means of a control at the base of the gimbal mounting.

The BIC 960 is designed for the most sophisticated systems.
